Podere Il Poggio
A Family Legacy Since 1909
In the heart of Tuscany's rolling hills, where time moves to the rhythm of seasons and the land tells stories of generations past.
Our Family Story
For over a century, Podere Il Poggio has been nurtured by my family. In 1909, my great-great-grandfather, Serafino Brunetti, acquired this historic podere, establishing a legacy that would span four generations.
Through the decades, my grandfather, Carlo Brunetti, lovingly maintained both the agricultural traditions and the hospitality that defines Podere Il Poggio, transforming part of the property into welcoming guest apartments.
Since 2022, I am Francesco Guarguaglini, and I carry forward this legacy—stewarding nearly 20 hectares of land that produces olives, chestnuts, grains, and wine, while welcoming guests to experience authentic Tuscan life in the apartments my grandfather created. The land, the traditions, and the warmth of hospitality remain as they were over a century ago.
The Napoleonic Era
During Napoleon's reign and the suppression of religious orders in Tuscany, the original farmhouse was constructed or significantly renovated.
This was the era of the Leopoldine Reforms, when the traditional mezzadria (sharecropping) system defined rural life throughout the Sienese countryside.
Early Proprietors
Following the 1810 construction, the podere likely passed through various hands, possibly including the Ferri family.
The Ferri family was deeply rooted in Radicondoli's rural community, exemplifying remarkable social mobility from peasant farmers to educated professionals and landowners during this transformative period in Italian history.
The Brunetti Family
In 1909, Serafino Brunetti acquired Podere Il Poggio, beginning over a century of dedicated family stewardship. Through generations, the Brunetti family maintained the agricultural traditions while adapting to changing times.
Carlo Brunetti, continuing his family's legacy, transformed part of the property into guest accommodations, sharing the beauty and tranquility of the farm with visitors from around the world.
A New Chapter
Since 2022, Francesco Guarguaglini has carried forward the vision and values of his family, ensuring that Podere Il Poggio remains a living connection to Tuscany's agricultural heritage while welcoming guests to experience the authentic rhythms of farm life.
Belforte: A Medieval Legacy
Belforte was once a contested medieval castle, fought over by Volterran bishops, the Aldobrandeschi counts, and the Republic of Siena. In 1778, it lost its administrative autonomy and became part of the Comune di Radicondoli.
By 1833, the frazione counted 635 inhabitants, mostly dedicated to agriculture. The territory was organized into poderi (farms with colonial houses), the traditional organizational structure of 19th-century Sienese countryside. Podere Il Poggio, named for its elevated position on a hill, was one of these historic agricultural units.
