Podere Il Poggio - Famiglia Guarguaglini

The Land

Nearly 20 hectares of Tuscan countryside producing the finest traditional crops

For over two centuries, the land of Podere Il Poggio has been carefully cultivated, following traditions passed down through generations. Our 20 hectares encompass the diversity that makes Tuscan agriculture legendary: ancient olive groves, chestnut woods, grain fields, and small vineyard plots.

πŸ«’

Olives

Our ancient olive groves have been producing exceptional extra virgin olive oil for generations. The trees, some over a century old, benefit from the hillside position and the unique microclimate of the Radicondoli area.

Hand-harvested each autumn, our olives are cold-pressed within hours of picking to preserve their distinctive peppery flavor and vibrant green color. The oil captures the essence of our terroir: the rocky soil, the Tuscan sun, and centuries of agricultural wisdom.

Chestnuts

The chestnut woods on our property are part of Tuscany's gastronomic heritage. For centuries, chestnuts were known as "the bread of the poor": a staple that sustained mountain communities through long winters.

Today, we continue to harvest these sweet nuts each fall, using them in traditional recipes and sharing them with our guests. Whether roasted over an open fire, ground into flour, or preserved for winter, chestnuts remain a connection to the land's historic rhythms.

🌾

Grains

Our grain fields follow the crop rotation methods that have characterized Tuscan farming since the mezzadria system of centuries past. We cultivate heritage varieties adapted to our soil and climate, avoiding modern industrial hybrids in favor of traditional biodiversity.

The golden fields of wheat and other grains not only provide harvest but also contribute to the iconic Tuscan landscape: those rolling hills of green in spring transforming to amber in summer, a sight unchanged for hundreds of years.

🍷

Wine

Our small vineyard produces house wine for family use and to share with guests: a continuation of the tradition that every Tuscan farm should have its own vino della casa. The vines grow on the hillside slopes where drainage and sun exposure are ideal.

While we don't produce wine commercially, each vintage captures the character of that year's growing season and embodies the authentic farm-to-table spirit of life at Podere Il Poggio.

πŸ“ Location

Nestled in the hills of Belforte, a frazione of Radicondoli in the province of Siena, Podere Il Poggio occupies an elevated position that gives it its name (poggio means "hill" in Italian).

This hillside location provides not only breathtaking panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside but also ideal growing conditions: well-drained soil, excellent sun exposure, and the temperature variations that bring out the best in our crops.

πŸ“œ Heritage

The ceramic commemorative plaque on our farmhouse, bearing the dates 1810 and 1909, serves as a tangible link to the past. These aren't just numbers: they represent the families, the hands, and the dedication that have shaped this land.

From the original construction during the Napoleonic era to the Brunetti family's acquisition in 1909, every generation has added its chapter to the story while respecting the agricultural traditions that define this place.

Sustainable by Tradition

What modern agriculture calls "sustainability" has always been our way of life. For over 200 years, this land has been worked with respect for natural cycles, crop diversity, and the wisdom passed down through generations. We don't follow trends. We maintain traditions that have proven their worth across centuries.
