Farm Products

Chestnuts, grains, wine, and seasonal harvests from our 20 hectares

Beyond our renowned olive oil, Podere Il Poggio produces a variety of crops that reflect the agricultural diversity of traditional Tuscan farming. Each product carries the character of our land and the wisdom of generations.

Chestnuts

Our chestnut woods are part of Tuscany's gastronomic heritage. For centuries after the year 800 a.c., chestnuts were the "bread of the poor", a staple food that sustained mountain and hill communities through long winters.

Each autumn, we harvest these sweet nuts using methods unchanged for generations. Whether roasted over an open fire, boiled and preserved, or ground into flour for traditional recipes like castagnaccio, our chestnuts connect us to centuries of Tuscan culinary tradition.

Traditional Uses:
  • • Roasted chestnuts (caldarroste)
  • • Chestnut flour for cakes and bread
  • • Preserved in honey or syrup
  • • Castagnaccio (traditional chestnut cake)

Grains

Our grain fields continue the crop rotation practices of the traditional mezzadria system. We cultivate heritage varieties adapted to our soil and climate: the same types of wheat and grains that have grown here for centuries.

The golden fields transform with the seasons: vibrant green in spring, amber waves in summer, and finally the harvest that has defined rural Tuscan life since time immemorial. These grains contribute not only to our farm's productivity but also to that iconic Tuscan landscape of rolling hills.

Our Approach:
  • • Heritage grain varieties
  • • Traditional crop rotation
  • • Sustainable farming methods
  • • Minimal intervention agriculture

House Wine

Our small vineyard produces vino della casa, house wine for family use and to share with guests. This continues the tradition that every Tuscan farm should have its own wine, reflecting the unique character of its terroir.

The vines grow on hillside slopes where drainage and sun exposure are ideal. While we don't produce commercially, each vintage captures that year's growing season and embodies the authentic farm-to-table spirit of Podere Il Poggio.

Wine Notes:
  • • Produced for family and guests
  • • Traditional hillside vineyard
  • • Reflects each year's character
  • • Paired with farm meals
